HISTORIC HOME SET WITHIN THE ROMANTIC RUINS OF A NORMAN CASTLE
This week we're heading west to the village of Wilton, a few miles from the Welsh border in the pretty Wye Valley. If you're after something truly unique look no further than Wilton Castle, a Grade I Ancient Monument which has been meticulously restored over a ten year period.
Sitting among the ruins of the 12th century castle the current house was adapted in the 19th century from the remains of the Tudor manor house which itself was built using parts of the original castle walls. With a history spanning close to 1000 years there is plenty of character to be found here! Whichever era you favour, be it Medieval, Elizabethan, Georgian or Victorian, you certainly won't be disappointed.
Internally there is perhaps a need to update some of the decor and the layout is a big higgledy-piggledy (none of the five bedrooms are en-suite) but really this place is all about the outside. The two acres of grounds are set mainly to the east and west sides of the castle and run down to the river Wye. It is a gardener's heaven with mature shrubs, well stocked borders, fruit trees and, of course, a courtyard with ornamental hedging.
Plenty of seating areas are dotted about the grounds from which to enjoy the magnificent views at any time of day. Quintessential English roses ramble around the remnants of mullioned windows - it's all so romantic!
If you have a majestic budget you can't quite be King of this castle but you could be Lord of it - the title Lord of Wilton Castle is also available to purchase, under separate negotiation.
Now, where's my Prince Charming?!
