LIVE LIKE A KING
BE LORD OF THE MANOR IN THIS HISTORIC PROPERTY THAT WAS ONCE
OWNED BY ALFRED THE GREAT
I spent my formative years on the Isle of Wight and, although some family and my best friend still reside there, nothing but nothing would ever tempt me back to live there permanently. As I always tell people who ask what it was like growing up there, it's great for young families and old people. And mostly just during the summer. I resent the fact that I need to take out a small mortgage to cross the Solent (ok, slight exaggeration but it is known as the most expensive stretch of water in the world) and can't bear to spend more than three days at a time there before the claustrophobia starts to set in.
That said, if money were no object and I didn't need a job I might be tempted to buy Arreton Manor. For approximately the same price as a 3-bed house in North London, this fine example of a stone manor house, which is mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086, could be yours. Steeped in a rich history, its origins have been traced back as far as 872AD to the reign of King Alfred the Great although much of the house was rebuilt in the Jacobean era.
Stunning panelling in the dining room.
Take a rest from King-ing in one of the magnificent bedrooms
Cook up a feast fit for a King in the ample kitchen
Imagine cosy evenings around this fire. Just add gin and tonic!
The formal knot garden is based on a design by Walter Stonhouse.
Kids will love this treehouse!
Set in 4.5 acres of grounds, Arreton Manor provides substantial accommodation with 8 bedrooms and seven reception rooms as well as several outbuildings, with delightful titles like The Old Dairy and The Nook. It has fantastic commercial potential for anyone considering the holiday-let industry. You would certainly be hostess with the mostest here!
If you're interested in owning your very own piece of history, Arreton Manor is for sale through Biles & Co in Bembridge with a guide price of £1.8m.
