HOW TO COMMISSION ARTWORK

Buying any creative service such as interior design or a branding package can be daunting because you can’t see exactly what you’re going to get before parting with your hard earned cash. Commissioning art is no different and requires a leap of faith and trust in your chosen artist to produce a piece or body of work that you will love for years to come.

With that in mind I’ve produced a handy guide* with everything you need to know about getting your hands on your very own bespoke piece of art (spoiler: you don’t have to be rich or posh!).

I LIKE YOUR ARTISTIC STYLE BUT I CAN’T SEE EXACTLY WHAT I’D LIKE

Quite often with art we only know what we like when we see it. What if you like someone’s style but the colours aren’t quite right or the piece is too big/small for your space? That’s when you can commission work to suit your taste, just like you’d get a tailored suit or made to measure curtains. Contact the artist through their gallery or directly in my case, to enquire if they are accepting commissions (unless you’re calling Damien Hirst, the answer will most likely be yes).

If you like a piece that has already sold I can recreate it to your specification. Although the composition may be repeated no two pieces are exactly the same so you can be sure you’re still getting an original.

CAN I SEE SOME OF YOUR ART IN REAL LIFE?

Personally, I like to visit my client at the property where the art is going to be hung so that I can assess the space and advise on size. I would normally bring along some samples so that you can get up close and personal with my work and discuss elements that you like or don’t like and see the texture in a finished piece. If this isn’t possible then a video call is the next best thing.

BUT ISN’T IT EXPENSIVE?

This really depends on your chosen artist but again, unless you’re calling Damien Hirst, it doesn’t have to be.

Each individual artist will have their own pricing structure. All my work is purely based on the size of the piece rather than time. This way I can be consistent and charge a definitive price rather than an estimate.

Some pieces will come already framed, which I include in the advertised price but if you’re not sure you can wait until you see the finished work before deciding if you’d like it framed. In this case the framing would be an additional cost.

No commission is too small but if you’re looking for a really big piece it’s worth checking with the artist first to see if they have the capacity to create what you want.

THAT’S IT?

Yes, it really is that simple. After that it’s down to us artists to create your very own masterpiece. When you commission a piece of art from me you will receive updates every step of the way and be able to change anything you don’t like or can ask to add more of something. Of course, if you’re happy to leave it up to me that’s great. I want you to love looking at your finished work as much as I love creating it.

So what are you waiting for? If you have a blank wall that could do with livening up, get in touch to start the commissioning process!

*please note, all artists are different and this is just based on how I like to work
